AC maintenance on a system in Belleview, FloridaFor the most part, air conditioners tend to fare well on their own. That said, they do require some attention from time to time. Failure to provide this attention could lead to a number of functional problems, and, in some cases, a shortened AC lifespan.

The question is: what does air conditioner maintenance entail? This Belleview air conditioning company is here to explain. Here are five tips for maintaining your air conditioner.

1. Change the Air Filter

If you’re going to take only one AC maintenance measure, that measure should be to change the HVAC’s air filter. Why is this important? Because it prevents the filter from becoming overloaded with dust and debris, thus helping to keep this dust and debris outside of the system itself. This, in turn, leads to greater system efficiency as well as an increased system lifespan.

Generally speaking, you should change your HVAC filter every 1 to 2 months. However, if you have cats or dogs in your home, you should think about changing them even more frequently.

2. Scrub the Condenser Coils

Another vital aspect of AC maintenance is to scrub the condenser coils. Condenser coils are positioned in the AC’s condenser and are, therefore, exposed to substantial amounts of residue. Should they go uncleaned for a long enough period of time, the AC’s functionality could suffer greatly.

Typically speaking, you should have your condenser coils cleaned at least once a year. However, two times is ideal: once at the start of AC season, and once in the middle of AC season.

3. Clear Debris

Air conditioner condensers are positioned outside of their corresponding homes. Because they’re located outside, they’re subject to substantial amounts of dirt and debris. This debris varies from tree branches, to leaves, to grass clippings, and a variety of other types of residue. All of these things can go a long way in impairing the condenser’s functionality.

In some cases, hard objects can even cause the condenser physical trauma. For instance, if a branch were to fall into the condenser, it could block its fan blades, leading to mechanical damage.

As such, you should keep an eye on your condenser as much as possible, clearing it of any residue as needed. You should also make sure to trim up any trees and/or hedges that are in its proximity. We recommend giving it at least 5 feet of clearance on each side.

4. Straighten the Fins

Another component of air conditioner maintenance is the straightening of the fins. AC fins exist on the outside of the condenser. Unfortunately, over time, they may become bent and misshaped, leading to AC efficiency issues.

As such, in order to keep the AC running properly, you should have these fins straightened by a professional Belleview HVAC technician. If necessary, this can be done during a routine AC maintenance check.

5. Inspect for Leaks

The final component of air conditioning maintenance is to inspect for leaks. Air conditioners make use of a liquid called refrigerant, which is vital in the operation of the AC as a whole. Unfortunately, because the AC’s refrigerant line is exposed, it is sometimes subject to physical trauma. Should this occur, the refrigerant will leak out of the system, causing functionality issues with the AC system.

As such, if you’re experiencing air conditioning issues, you’ll want to check the area directly under your refrigerant line. If it’s unusually wet, you should call your local HVAC repair specialist.
