Ruud air conditioning system at a house in Jensen Beach, FloridaIf you want to get the most out of your air conditioner, you’ll need to provide it with proper maintenance. Failure to perform maintenance on your AC not only causes it to run less efficiently, but it also reduces its lifespan.

The question is: what does Jensen Beach air conditioning maintenance entail? Great question, and it’s one that we can answer in detail. Without further ado, here is everything you need to know about air conditioning maintenance in Jensen Beach, Florida.

1. Replace Your Air Filter

One of the most important parts of maintaining your air conditioner is to replace its air filter. This filter catches dust and debris that might have instead entered the ductwork and air conditioning unit. In doing so, it keeps the AC running efficiently.

The issue is that, because it’s catching so much dust and debris, it gets dirty fairly quickly. If it’s not replaced in a timely manner, it will fail to do its job, putting undue strain on the AC unit.

It’s recommended that you change your AC air filter every two months or so. This will not only help your AC run more efficiently, but it will also prolong its lifespan.

2. Straighten the Fins

On the outside of your air conditioner condenser is a series of thin, metal strips. These strips are called fins, and they’re vital to the operation of an AC unit.

These fins can become bent over time, and when this occurs, the AC isn’t able to run as efficiently. This triggers the air conditioner to work harder, causing more wear and tear.

For this reason, it’s important to straighten the fins on your AC. Take a knife and run it between each fin to separate them as needed. This will allow your AC to function at maximum capacity.

3. Clean the Coils

Another component that’s vital to your AC’s functionality is the coils. These exist on the inside of the condenser, and they can become dirty over time. As such, they should be cleaned every year or so. For more information on cleaning your AC coils, take a look at this article.

4. Clean the Ducts

Though the HVAC filter catches a great deal of the dust and debris around an air conditioner, some of it still makes its way into the AC unit. When this occurs, it’s then transferred to the air ducts. Over time, dust and debris can accumulate inside of these ducts, blocking airflow and causing air quality issues. For this reason, it’s recommended that you have your ducts cleaned every two to three years. While you could attempt to do this on your own, you’ll likely be better off by hiring an HVAC specialist.

5. Keep the Condenser Area Cleared

Your air conditioner condenser exists outside, which means it’s exposed to all sorts of entities — from falling branches, to overgrown hedges, to miscellaneous litter, and more. If you want to keep your AC running at maximum efficiency, it’s important that you keep an eye out for these things.

We recommend leaving at least five feet of clearance on all sides around your condenser. Trim your hedges, remove any branches from around your condenser, and try to keep the area tidy.
