electrician-indian-river-estatesWhile modern electrical systems are generally extremely reliable, they are still far from infallible. Depending on the situations that they encounter, they could experience anything from outages, to power surges, to a variety of other electrical problems.

Fortunately, when it comes to power surges, there are protection methods available. What are these protection methods, you might be wondering? Surge protectors!

Looking to learn a little more about surge protection? If so, you’re reading the right article. We’re going to discuss the details below.

Where Do Power Surges Come From?

In order to understand the importance of surge protection, it’s important to know where power surges come from. These unexpected blasts of electricity are caused by a number of different factors, the most common of which will be reviewed below.

Lightning Strikes

One of the most common causes of power surges is lightning strikes. When lightning hits a power line, it sends an excessive wave of electricity through that power line, causing it to overdrive the electricity that is running into adjoining homes.

Power Outages

Another cause of power surges is power outages. If your electrical company switches your electricity from one grid to another, or if a vehicle strikes an adjoining electrical pole, the electricity running through your power lines can become rushed, causing a surge.

Internal Overload

In some cases, internal overload can be the cause of a power surge. For instance, if a specific circuit in your home is being used to power several appliances, turning on one of those appliances could cause electricity to overload your system. In addition, using improperly wired appliances could also cause internal overload.

Power Supply Malfunctions

While it doesn’t happen often, sometimes the power company itself sends too much power through a specific powerline. As a result, any buildings that get their power from that powerline become overloaded. The result is, of course, a power surge.

Surge Protection Options

In general, there are two types of surge protection: whole-house surge protection and individual surge protection. We will explain the details of both below.

Whole-House Surge Protection

If you want to protect all of the appliances in your home from power surges, you would be wise to install a whole-house surge protection device. These devices are connected to the electric service boxes of homes and commercial properties, essentially stopping surges before they can even begin.

By installing one of these devices, you will be protecting everything in your home, including but not limited to your kitchen appliances, bathroom appliances, and electronics. Generally, whole-house surge protection are not prohibitively expensive.

Individual Surge Protectors

Whereas whole-house surge protection covers all of the electric appliances existing within a building, individual surge protectors will cover only the appliances that are plugged into them. Built into power strips, individual surge protectors can be bought online and in big box stores such as Walmart.

These devices are available at a range of prices, but they can usually be found for as low as $10. While they’re most commonly used for computers and computer accessories, they can be used with all types of electrical appliances.
