Wondering whether your electrical system requires repair? Curious as to the types of electrical problems you should be looking out for? Take it from a Port St Lucie (PSL) electrician: here are five electrical problems that should be mindful of.

1. Flickering Lights

Do your lights flicker on a regular basis? If so, you would be wise to have your electrical system inspected. There’s a good chance that it has incurred a problem of some kind.

While a flickering light here and there isn’t a major cause for concern, a light that flickers several times a week most definitely is. There are a number of things that could be causing your lights to flicker.

In most cases, deteriorated wiring it to blame. This is a serious problem, and it’s one that should be corrected as soon as possible. Failure to repair loose wiring could result in a house fire.

2. Frequent Circuit Breaker Trips

Does your circuit breaker trip every time you turn on your washer? That’s not normal. As such, if it’s happening, it’s recommended that you call an electrician in for an inspection.

The reason that circuit breakers trip is that their corresponding circuitry has too much electricity passing through it. In most cases, this comes as a result of a wiring installation mishap. That said, other factors can cause it as well.

Fortunately, a seasoned electrician will be able to spot the source of the problem and take measures to correct it.

3. Quickly Burning Bulbs

Do your light bulbs burn out within a month or so of being screwed in? If so, you are most definitely dealing with an electrical problem.

When this occurs, it’s because there’s too much heat passing through the light bulb. The typical cause of this is an inconsistency between the wattage of the light bulb and the wattage of the fixture. As such, it can generally be fixed by choosing a lower wattage light bulb.

Note, however, that this is not always the case. In some cases, the electrical system itself will need to be altered. To facilitate the alteration, you’ll most likely need a professional electrician.

4. Power Dips

Imagine you turn on your furnace…only for your lights to dim and your refrigerator to power down. While they don’t shut off entirely, they have clearly experienced an event of some kind. That event is known as a power dip, and it’s a major cause for concern.

Power dips can be caused by a variety of factors, including short circuits, loose wiring, and power surges, to name just a few. However, regardless of their cause, they require the attention of professional electricians. A licensed electrician will be able to identify the source of the power dip, and he or she can take action to correct it.

5. Electrical Shocks

Were you shocked while plugging something into one of your outlets? If so, it’s strongly recommended that you bring in an electrician as soon as possible. Electrical shocks are never normal and are always dangerous. As such, they should be dealt with promptly.

There are a number of things that can cause an outlet to shock you. That said, the most likely culprit is loose wiring. Regardless of the cause, an electrician can help you.
