furnace-air-filter-replacementIdeally, your furnace will run until it’s produced the temperature displayed on your thermostat. However, in some cases, a furnace will shut off long before this occurs. If this is happening to your furnace, it has undoubtedly encountered a problem of some kind.

This is an issue you’ll probably want to get resolved. Fortunately, we’re here to help you do just that. Below, we’re going to discuss some of the most common reasons for a prematurely ceasing furnace in Port St Lucie, Florida.

Its Air Filter is Dirty

Perhaps the most common reason for short-cycling furnaces is dirty air filters. If an air filter becomes too dirty, it allows dust and other residue to escape into its corresponding furnace. This residue puts undue strain on the furnace, causing it to work excessively and overheat.

If your furnace overheats, it will eventually shut down. If this happens, it will likely stop operating before it produces your desired temperature. To prevent this from happening, we recommend changing your air filter every 1 to 2 months.

It’s Too Big for Your Home

Another reason that your furnace might keep shutting off is that it’s too big for your home. Furnaces are created in a range of different sizes, and are manufactured to accommodate different volumes of space.

If you choose a furnace that’s too big for your home, it will heat your home too quickly, and will be in a constant cycle of on and off. This constant cycle puts wear and tear on your furnace, and can cause it to break down prematurely.

One of the last things you want is for your furnace to be too big. If it is too big, your best option might be to replace it with a smaller one.

Your Thermostat is Malfunctioning

Furnaces often shut off due to thermostat malfunctions. If your thermostat cannot send accurate signals to your furnace, your furnace could very well shut off before it produces a specified temperature.

If this is happening, it’s generally happening for one of two reasons: 1. Your thermostat wires or WiFi connection are impaired, or 2. Your thermostat is positioned too closely to a source of heat. In either case, the thermostat will require professional attention.

Its Thermocouple is Dirty

A furnace thermocouple is used to determine whether or not a flame is burning in the furnace. If a flame is, indeed, burning in the furnace, the thermocouple will alert the gas valve, allowing gas to continue flowing, and allowing the furnace to continue operating.

However, if the thermocouple becomes dirty (and it very easily could), it might deliver poor information to the gas valve. Even if a flame is burning, the dirty thermocouple could fail to signal this to the gas valve, and the valve will cease to produce gas.

The result of all of this? The furnace will shut off. Often times, it will fail to start in the first place. Other times, it will shut off in the middle of a heat cycle. Regardless of when it’s shutting off, you’ll likely need to either clean or replace your thermocouple.
